Suspect in Felony Assault of Detective Apprehended
(Wednesday January 19, 2005) The St. Charles Police Department is
detaining a suspect pending application of formal charges of Assault of
a Law Enforcement Officer and Felony resisting arrest, extending from an
incident that occurred on Tuesday, January 18, 2005.
The crime occurred at approximately 11:20 am at the Walgreens located
at 1780 Zumbehl Road. A white male subject was at the check out
register, attempting to buy cigarettes using an insufficient funds check.
As the clerk called for the manager, to approve the check, the suspect
took the cigarettes from the counter and walked out the front door of
the business. A St. Charles Police Detective, in plain clothes, had
been standing next to the suspect in line at the register and followed
the suspect outside in order to detain him for purposes of further
investigation.
Once outside the Detective confronted the subject attempting to gather
more information, the suspect refused to cooperate, entering a Black,
1997 Dodge Dakota Truck, with Missouri license plates of 083-EP9. A
physical struggle occurred between the Detective and the suspect as the
Detective attempted to keep the suspect from leaving. The suspect began
to drive forward out of the truck's parking spot with the driver's
door open, dragging the detective along the ground. The truck, which
later was determined to have been reported stolen out of the City of
Florissant, crashed into another vehicle that was parked on the parking
lot, knocking the Detective free of the vehicle.
The stolen truck being driven by the suspect was last seen driving
northbound on Hawks Nest towards I-70. The Detective was transported by
ambulance for injuries sustained during the assault, to a local medical
facility, where he was treated and released.
The 24 year old suspect was taken into custody in the morning hours of
Wednesday January 19, 2005, when an alert Bridgeton Police Officer
located the stolen truck parked in the 3600 Block of Pennridge.
Identity of the 24 year old suspect is being withheld pending formal
charges.
